One big push for Helmsley

RESIDENTS of Helmsley are mounting their biggest campaign ever in a bid to win the Yorkshire in Bloom award.

The all-out effort comes after the picturesque market town got a shock rating in the spring judging - 11th out of 13.

The Helmsley in Bloom contest committee is determined to fight back and prove to the next set of judges, in July's summer judging, that it really is a blooming lovely town.

As part of their campaign, the committee is giving away hanging baskets, says member Val Travis.

"We are urging traders, businesses, and residents to put up a hanging basket, and to run competitions for the best hanging basket and tub container."

Shops in the town are displaying special posters to encourage more support for the prestigious Yorkshire competition.

"We are confident that Helmsley can prove the spring judges just how wrong they were. Helmsley always looks great in summer and, this year, I'm sure it will be better than ever," said Mrs Travis.

Entry forms for the best hanging basket, tub, or container competition are available at shops displaying the posters.

Anyone wanting information or able to offer help is asked to contact Mrs Travis at 48 High Street, or Coun Jane Barker on (01439) 771850.
