HOW THE VOTES CHANGED

Differences between the votes in 1999 and 2004. THERE was a large-scale increase in votes cast in Ryedale in the Euro election this time round compared to the last European Parliament election.

With an electorate of 40,214, nearly 46pc cast their ballots; in 1999, just under 30pc of the electorate of 66,525 voted.

As it was elsewhere in the country, the biggest gain was by the UK Independence Party which garnered the second highest number of votes overall, having come fourth in '99.

The British National Party gained five times the number of votes it had last time round.

Labour votes took a slight dip, as did the Liberal Democrats, while the Conservatives, despite being the winners by a considerable margin, took the biggest dive of the major parties. Results for 2004
