Drumming up a music workshop

CHILDREN at Helmsley and Pickering county primary schools had a special treat when they joined in a workshop with professional musicians playing drums.

The Pied Piper Project works with musicians and poets to organise free gigs and workshops in schools, village halls and youth centres. Based in Ryedale, the project is led by Sarah Derbyshire, UK director of Live Music Now!, and backed by the Yehudi Menuhin Scheme for young musicians, and Simon Thackray, the man behind The Shed at Brawby.

Taking part in the school workshops were Angata members Simon, Baba and Thierry, a multi-cultural percussion group which demonstrated music from West Africa. The verdict of the children? "It was terrific!"
