Swinton ladies lift title

Lynne Metcalf's triple from Swinton clinched Malton Bowling Club's Open Triples competition, last Sunday, sponsored by JB Motors.

A total of 24 triples from Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Swinton, Pickering, Welham, Settrington, Heslerton, Richmond, Guisborough Priory and Malton took part in the two-day event last week-end.

Andy Bingham's Welham triple finished runners-up, ahead of Peter Turnbull's Helmsley trio, in third, and a team headed by Margaret Cowell, from Guisborough Priory, in fourth.

In a keenly-fought final, Andy Bingham's team led 5-4 after seven ends. At the eighth end, Lynne Metcalf's triple took the lead with a four to take a three-shot lead. After 12 ends, only four shots separated the teams.

Metcalf, plus team-mates Margaret Roberts and Sue Westoby, took control with some splendid drawing to the jack as the sun came out and the rink conditions changed.

The Swinton ladies made sure that Bingham and his team of Ray Wormold and Noel (Joe) Young could not break their hold on the match, with the score 17-8 after 16 ends. When the 17th end was completed, the Welham side, who had come back twice earlier in the day to reach the final, conceded.

On Saturday, the six group winners plus the two highest losers made it through to the second day, when they competed in two groups of four, the winners of each group competing in the final.

Organisers wish to thank the sponsors, greenkeepers and volunteers in helping to make the event a success.

Manager of JB Motors Stuart Carruthers presented the trophies.
