Schools put their mark on the arts

SCHOOLS in Pickering and Helmsley have won a national accolade for their work in encouraging young artists' talents.

Pickering Junior School and Helmsley CP School have each been presented with one of 1,113 Artsmark awards by the Arts Council of England for commitment to providing opportunities across all art forms from drama to music, design to literature, dance and sculpture. To achieve the award, schools are encouraged to work with artists and art organisations.

"I'm really pleased that the Arts Council has recognised the junior school's progressive, well-balanced arts education programme, which enables pupils to work with local artists," said Pickering headteacher Andrew Clark.

"There is a huge amount of arts activity going on here. You only have to enter the school hall to be surrounded by some stunning examples of children's art led by teachers in all classes.

"Emma Bogic, our art co-ordinator, is very conscious of the impact of art work in all its dimensions can have on the positive development of children, whether it be dance, music, pottery, drawing or painting."

Mr Clark added that the award celebrated teamwork throughout the school and both the children and the staff were to be congratulated.

Helmsley deputy headteacher Jane Clack said: "I am delighted that the Arts Council has recognised Helmsley CP School's progressive, well-balanced arts education programme, which enables pupils to work with local artists. A big thank you goes to staff for all their hard work in achieving this award."

Arts Council England chairman Sir Christopher Frayling said: "Every young person should have a basic entitlement to participate in, and experience the arts. The schools receiving the Artsmark today display a commitment to providing young people with a wide range of arts activities that we believe all schools should strive for."
