York and District Senior League - Ripon 56 all out - Malton and Old Malton 57 for 0. MALTON and Old Malton continued their great start to the season when they went 24 points clear at the top of the first division after romping to a ten-wicket win at Ripon.
On a dampish day, Malton won the toss and took the sensible step of bowling first. Chris Hudson claimed two wickets in the first over and reduced Ripon to 12 for 5, as keeper Gary Hall and slips Darren Wyrill and Ryan Bulger took some super catches. Tony Linsley's tight spell was also rewarded with a wicket as Malton were in complete control.
Ripon's tail rallied, but Ryan Bulger made an important breakthrough and Hudson finished them off to finish with career-best figures of 8 for 25.
Malton's openers Greg Johnson (27no) and Darren Wyrill (24no) wasted no time in knocking off the required runs, taking just 40 minutes to seal Malton's impressive victory.
Pickering 174 for 8, Acomb 150 for 8
After the previous week's defeat at the hands of Heworth, premier division side Pickering hit back well against third-placed Acomb, a side yet to taste defeat this season in the league.
Chasing the Pikes' total, Acomb were in real trouble when Tony Evans picked up two wickets in his first over. The veteran bowler went on to bowl 25 overs from one end and finished with the excellent figures of 5 for 63. Simon King and Mark Aconley took excellent catches and Rob Aconley made two stumpings, as Pickering made life difficult for the visiting batsmen. C Simpson (29), Joey Burton (29no) and Dave Simpson (22no) were the main contributors for Acomb.
Pikes had Chris Nichols back for this game and he showed his worth with a valuable 30 runs, figuring in a 42-run partnership with skipper Col Frank, who creamed 51 runs. At 117 for 3 with 18 overs to go, Pickering were in control, but then lost three wickets for no runs. A good stand between Rob Aconley (21) and Mark Aconley (15) got Pickering back on track. Other useful knocks came from Craig Aconley (18) and Simon King (12no).
Dave Sykes, as usual, bowled 25 overs from one end and returned 3 for 65. Andy Tuite came on for the last ten overs and did well with his left-arm medium pace, taking 4 for 37.
League round-up
In the premier division, Sheriff Hutton Bridge's Dave Houldridge celebrated his call into the first team by taking 4 for 35 and claiming the tenth premier division hat-trick, but Clifton Alliance still made 250 all out. Bridge struggled in reply to 129 for 8, with only Paul Scaling (32) making any impact.
In division one, Goole Town's Kevin Murphy chose a good time to score his maiden century against Duncombe Park, when his unbeaten 106 rescued his side from 88 for 5 to reach a match-winning 177 for 5. Earlier, Gautam Sharma took 5 for 49 as Park made 174 all out, with Colin Humpleby (33) and Adam Rayner (28) the main contributors.
Hovingham made a slow start in division two at home to Scarborough II, but picked up the pace to set a healthy target, finishing 183 all out. Stuart Prest narrowly missed a century when caught and bowled for 96. Nick Elliot's 28 helped the side to 183 before Hovingham were all out just two overs short of completion. Robert Harrison took 4 for 33.
Scarborough coasted to a seven-wicket win in reply, as Mark Welford (27), Richard Brooke (39), Luke Van Kempen (37) and former Snainton player Craig Sanderson (38no) all contributed. They were aided by 30 extras conceded by Hovingham.
Pickering II remain at the top of division three, despite losing by eight wickets at Acomb in a table-topping clash. Andy Hill made 39 and Andrew Grayson 26 for the visitors, but good bowling from the experienced Richard Clayton (4 for 31) and teenage spinner Richard Allman (3 for 39) pegged the Pikes to 127 for 9. Clayton then hit an unbeaten 52 as his side clinched an easy win.
Stillington maintained their momentum when they returned from Malton and Old Malton II with a five-wicket win under their belt after Khaquan Arsal Raja made 71. Lester Parkin's 58 was at the hub of Malton's total of 152 for 7.
Two batsmen hit centuries in a high-scoring parochial affair in division four at Sheriff Hutton where the home side gained the better of a draw over local rivals Sheriff Hutton Bridge II.
Ex-Bridge player Craig Dodsworth was the first home casualty when he fell for 38 at 75, but Chris Megone and Ed Taylor (43) then added 108 for the second wicket. Ex-York player Megone went on to complete his first league century before being caught by Steve Clipston off Dave Ellis for 116 at 223 for 4, as Sheriff moved to 239 for 4.
Clipston was then an early faller when Bridge replied, but Vic Klays and teenager David Coverdale put on a massive 178 for the second wicket. This ended with the score on 192 when Klays was run out for 102. Coverdale followed for 70 soon afterwards and the Bridge's reply ground to a halt at 216 for 7.
Tight spells from Peter Bainbridge (4 for 16) and Tom Bartram (3 for 21) enmeshed the Hovingham II batsmen so they were only able to make 87 for 9 off 45 overs, which allowed York III to run out winners by nine wickets in division five.
York Senior League Cup first round
Easingwold 188 for 8
Pickering 105 all out
Pickering were outclassed by Easingwold in the cup on Monday. Pikes' young spinner Matthew Kings bounced back from conceding 16 runs off his first two overs to return 2 for 35 from his allotted eight overs. Spin twin Sean Stuchbery took 2 for 30 and Craig Aconley, although failing to pick up a wicket, bowled a tidy eight overs for 25. Martin Robinson and Danny Copeland top-scored for Easingwold with 35. Johnny Marwood, who also plays for Harome, made 23 as Easingwold finished 188 for 8.
When Pikes replied, Stuchbery went early, the result of some sloppy running, and they found themselves in dire straits at 23 for 4. They never really recovered, but Mark Aconley (33), younger brother Phillip (19) and Simon King (19) provided the positives. Gavin Rees took 3 for 23 and Johnny Marwood 2 for 16.
On Saturday, Pickering visit Beverley before entertaining Hornsea in the East Yorkshire Cup KO on Sunday.
Richard Musgrave hit 105 and Lorenzo Ingram 82 in a first-wicket stand of 170 that put Clifton Alliance on the road to a 136-run victory over Sheriff Hutton Bridge. Clifton's score of 263 for 4 was way beyond Bridge who replied with 127-6, Steve Crowder making a half-century.
Edward Readman trophy first round
Malton & Old Malton 210 for 5
Scarborough II 148 for 8
On a sunny bank holiday Monday, a large crowd gathered to watch two old East Yorkshire Cup foes compete at Malton.
The home side elected to bat and put 40 on for the first wicket, but three quick wickets brought Scarborough back into it.
Neil Johnson was joined by Gary Hall, and these two built a match-winning partnership. The pair pushed and drove the ball to all corners before Hall was bowled for 36. Johnson completed an unbeaten century in the last over, before young debutant Michael Linsley hammered the final ball for four to leave Scarborough chasing a daunting target.
They came out of the blocks straight away, with Neil Fletcher (29) chancing his arm. After he fell to Tony Linsley, Malton introduced spinners Mark Yates and Ryan Bulger. They turned the screw, bowling 16 tidy overs between them and claiming a wicket apiece. Malton's third spinner, Danny Foxton, then demolished Scarborough's middle order, claiming 4 for 31. Mark Welford (42) kept Scarborough going, but once he was out, the innings petered out.
Hemingbrough 146 all out
Hovingham 121 all out
Hemingbrough were dismissed for 146 by a Hovingham side, who fielded well. Young keeper James Banks took the first of four catches in the seventh over to send Nathan Briggs back to the pavilion. Jon Rooke held a stunning catch at mid-off in the ninth over, and the tenth over saw the dismissal of Maqsood Akbar to a catch at long-on by Tom Lund for only seven, this being the second time Tom has caught Akbar this season. Hemingbrough's captain, John Waterhouse, led the batting, with 50, and Nabeel Khan made 28 to push the home side to a 30-partnership for the last wicket. John Thornton topped Hovingham's bowling figures with 3 for 23.
Hovingham, however, could make little use of the advantage and lost their first three wickets for only 39 runs to Nabeel Khan's superb bowling (3 for 19). A fifth-wicket stand of 43 put Hovingham back in the frame and Jonty Rounthwaite made a valiant effort, scoring 27 before being given out lbw to give Gurdiv Singh his fourth wicket. Gurdiv finished off the batting with figures of 5 for 13.
