Stars past and present head for Malton

THE man who hit the fastest ever one-day century looks set to be one of the star attractions when a Malton and Old Malton representative side take on Lashings on Sunday, June 20.

Shahid Afridi smashed 102 off just 37 balls on his debut for Pakistan against Kenya when he was just 16 in the 1996-97 season. Afridi, who has played in 179 one-day internationals, including the recent one-day series against India, will be just one of a host of top current and former internationals on show at Malton.

Another player who Lashings have confirmed they hope will be available is Zimbabwean bowler Henry Olonga, who is now based in England after fleeing his homeland. He is famous for wearing a black armband in the 2003 World Cup after his protest over "the death of democracy" in Zimbabwe.

Definitely on show will be former West Indies skipper and former Yorkshire player Richie Richardson, who will skipper the side known as the Harlem Globetrotters of cricket.

Other players likely to feature are Stuart Williams, Sherwin Campbell, Grant Flower, Franklyn Rose, Vasbert Drakes and Jimmy Adams, though the final squad may change due to players' commitments.

Chairman Dennis Johnson said over 200 tickets for the match had already been sold, but the club are hoping for a crowd of up to 3,000 on the day.

Tickets at £5 are available from Will's Bar and Hoppers, both in Malton market place, and Malton News in Wheelgate. They are also available from Joy Hudson on (01653) 692223. Tickets at £6 can also be bought on the day.
