Veterans recall 'forgotten' battle

SCORES of people have paid tributes to a forgotten army at Eden Camp, near Malton.

June 2004 marks the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, but Korean veterans were keen to make people aware that it is not the only significant 60th anniversary of the Second World War.

Between April and June, 1944, the 14th Army was turning the tide of battle against Japan in the Far East - a battle that was little known to the public at the time because of a lack of film and press reports.

After discussions with the Burma Star Association, Eden Camp agreed to dedicate a special day on Sunday to the veterans of the association, and tell of the part they played in the Allied victory over Japan. As well as a special display relating to the Burma Campaign, a plaque was dedicated to the Burma Star Association in the Chapel of Remembrance (Hut 29).
