'Forgotten army' remembered at museum

TRIBUTES were paid to a "forgotten army" at a commemorative event at a North Yorkshire museum.

Next month marks the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, but veterans of the war in Burma are keen to make people aware that it is not the only significant 60th anniversary of the Second World War.

Between April and June, 1944, the 14th Army was turning the tide of battle against Japan in the Far East - a battle that was little known to the public at the time because of a lack of film and press reports.

A spokesman for Eden Camp, Malton, said: "Many who know Eden Camp will probably assume that, like most other military museums and other organisations and attractions, we would be doing something special to mark the anniversary.

"However, anybody who knows Eden Camp really well will know that we have always been keen to champion and pay tribute to the unsung heroes and heroines of the Second World War."

After discussions with the Burma Star Association, Eden Camp agreed to dedicate a special day yesterday to the veterans of the association, and tell of the part they played in the Allied victory over Japan.

As well as a special display relating to the Burma campaign, a plaque was dedicated to the Burma Star Association in the Chapel of Remembrance (Hut 29).
