RJF Homes Beckett League - Division Two League Cup final - Coxwold 3, Heslerton reserves 1. COXWOLD's Daniel Jaques flew all the way back from Ibiza to help his side become the first winner of the Division Two League Cup on Monday night at Kirkbymoorside.
Jaques, who is working on the island for six months, scored his side's third goal with 11 minutes to go before jetting back to Ibiza the morning after.
On a difficult playing surface, the first half was mainly a midfield contest. Coxwold's Jason Sargent almost scored after five minutes when his 40-yard shot bounced and almost caught the Heslerton keeper Gareth Driver off his line. At the other end, Heslerton's Nick Bell and Curtis Drummond went close.
The second half was an action-packed affair. In the first minute, Coxwold went close when Adrian Leckenby had a good shot superbly tipped over by Driver. Soon afterwards, Phil Taylor went close from a James Dickens corner. Coxwold continued to press as Sam Preston set up Tom Kay, whose header hit the bar.
Heslerton took the lead after 52 minutes. Wayne Pilmoor crossed from the left, Chris Thornton dummied allowing the ball to run on to Ashley Cooke, who scored with a right-foot shot from 12 yards. Two minutes later, they should have increased their lead when Andrew Sellers crossed for Pilmoor, who shot just wide.
A minute later, Andrew Sellers lobbed Ian Lamb, the Coxwold keeper, but Phil Taylor raced back and cleared off the line. It proved to be the turning point of the game.
Coxwold equalised after 60 minutes, thanks to an own goal headed in by Nick Bell. Six minutes later, the impressive James Dickens put Coxwold ahead. It was left to jet-setter Jaques to clinch the cup with the third.
The cup was presented to Jason Sargent, the Coxwold skipper, by Walter Marshall, a management committee member of the league and Slingsby secretary. Sargent thanked his players and supporters.
Man of the match winners were Nick Thorne (Coxwold) and Ashley Cooke (Heslerton reserves).
