Big turnout for rally

A HELMSLEY area farm was a hive of activity on Saturday as Young Farmers took part in their Ryedale district rally.

There was a large turnout at Studford Farm where the event was held, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Fawcett, and where Young Farmers returned for an evening disco. With the sun blazing down, there were a lot of blistering sore arms and faces, but there was much humorous activity with many options for competitors to chose from.

Happy hour started rather early for Mrs Turnbull "pure nectar, but we'll just add a little bit more for good luck." Richard Bell strutting about on stage left little to the imagination - "Calendar Boy" meets Bam Bam springs to mind. Other humorous high points, Adam Turnbull trying to replicate the tossing the caber with his hammer during the carpentry competition (talk about the Highland fling). Hats off to Andrew Wilson for his patience with Victoria Coupe in the ATV handling - can either of these members tell their left from their right? To quote Mr Hebron from Moorland ATV: "If I'd been Andrew, I'd have throttled you by now."

Congratulations to Helmsley Young Farmers as they received the trophy for the overall championship.

On behalf of Ryedale District Young Farmers, a huge thank you to all the judges and stewards who gave up their valuable time before and on the day. A further thank you to: Mr and Mrs Fairburn for hosting the hunter horse judging competition on April 15, which included a welcome supper afterwards; Mr and Mrs Hope for providing stock and venue for the dairy cattle judging on April 18, where members were treated to afternoon tea; for the providers of the tractor with trailer, Land Rover with cattle trailer; Bill Hebron for the quad bike and trailer from Moorland ATV; providers of the stock for the judging competitions; Mrs Fawcett and Helen Wilson, for keeping the scoreboard up to date and writing out the prize cards.

Well done to Sarah Waterworth, district secretary, for keeping up to date and organised with the running of competitions and gathering of the results. Adding to Sarah's pressure was the organisation of her wedding which is on Saturday, May 2. On behalf of the district, good luck and best wishes to Sarah Waterworth and Paul Teasdale on their special day.

Reminder: To all members travelling to the national AGM on Friday, May 1, don't forget your membership cards: no card, no party.
