A COUPLE narrowly missed being impaled on a metal stake after their car ploughed into a fence post which sliced through the engine.
PC Paul Moon said Derek Bailey, 68, and his wife suffered minor injuries after the accident near Summer Tree Farm, on the High Marishes to Thornton-le-Dale road at 4.20pm yesterday.
PC Moon said their blue Ford Fiesta, driven by Mr Bailey, swerved to avoid a car coming in the opposite direction. The vehicle missed Summer Tree Bridge but hit fencing on the opposite side of the road.
"A metal stake went through the car into the driver's compartment, narrowly missing them. They were lucky not to be impaled on the stake," said PC Moon.
The vehicle came to rest at the bottom of a 6ft ditch on the right hand side of the road. Mr Bailey received a bump to the head.
