Town's floral challenge

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help clean up a Ryedale town to aid its effort towards clinching a Yorkshire In Bloom award.

In a recent effort in Helmsley, the town's Young Farmers' Club and Scouts joined the local Rotary Club and residents to tackle a clear-up of the beck, from High Street to Boro Gate.

Coun Jane Barker, chairman of the Helmsley In Bloom Committee, said "We had a splendid and enthusiastic response and everyone made a big impact. We have been anxious to involve young people in the competition and they did an excellent job."

Traders and businesses are being urged to put out floral displays in readiness for the judging on Tuesday.

Coun Barker has urged anyone who wants to help with clean-ups or displays, to phone her on 01439 770355 or 07709 708268.

She is organising a gardener's question time lunch at the town hall on June 27, to raise funds to enhance Helmsley's entry in the competition.
