Greg has a shave for charity

IT TOOK 30 years to grow... and just 30 minutes to shave off.

That's how long mature student Greg Christie spent shedding his familiar facial hair.

Greg, 51, of Norton, volunteered to have his beard shaved off to raise cash for the Royal National Institute For The Blind and other local charities.

Former car marketing man Greg first grew a beard in 1974 to cover up spots.

When he lost it on Wednesday as part of a York St John College Rag Week cash drive he was pleased to see the acne had vanished.

"It was very daunting as I've had a beard for so long," he admitted. "But it's nice to discover what's underneath.

"My wife and children were very shocked. They said I looked at least ten years younger, so I guess it's going to stay off now!"

English literature student Greg said he hoped to raise about £100, although five other charity beard shavers should push the total nearer £500.

He thanked his hairdresser, Joy Mayman, from Grade One, Malton, for offering her cutting skills free for charity.
