Veal option for dairy over-quota

THERE may be a little light at the end of the tunnel for over-quota dairy farmers, says Rosette Foods.

It's a DEFRA-backed scheme to produce "rose veal" from Holstein-Fresian bull calves. Farmers raise cattle for the scheme, feeding them a specialised formula. Rosette Foods buys the cattle at a pre-agreed price at nine months.

Now, to help dairy farmers who are facing quota and other difficulties, Rosette has set up a one-off scheme to allow whole milk to be fed to calves on-farm for a twelve-week period from now until the end of the quota year in April.

The calves will be moved to specialist finishers after this period.

Participating producers must be Freedom Food approved members.
