Clinic to outline organic scheme

DEFRA is organising regional clinics during January and February so that organic farmers and growers can learn more about the Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) maintenance option, announced last summer.

Locally, a clinic will be held on February 26 at Askham Bryan College, York.

New five-year agreements were introduced for land which has been converted and is still not subject to an OFS conversion agreement.

Payments range from £150 per hectare total payment over five years for top fruit orchards and Arable Area Payment Scheme-eligible land and land in permanent crops; to £115 per hectare for other improved land; and £25 per hectare for unimproved land.

DEFRA says it is keen to encourage more farmers to convert to organic production and to maintain their land in an environmentally beneficial way following conversion.
