Farm walk advice on nitrate zones

THE nitrate zone legislation and best ways of using manure are key topics on two farm walks this week.

Organised by the North Yorkshire Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG), the walks, both starting at 1pm, will be held on Thursday, January 22, at Rudding House Farm, Pannal, Harrogate and on Friday, January 23, at Crow Tree Farm, Thornton-le-Beans, Northallerton. The events will include a machinery demonstration, a demonstration of farm slurry and manure testing kits and Environment Agency staff will be present to answer questions.

February 4, an all-day introduction to woodland management at RHS Harlow Carr

February 5, a half-day seminar on farm diversification and planning to be held at The Anchor (A65), Gargrave, 1-5pm; includes buffet lunch, cost £15 plus VAT

February 10, all day orchard course at Easedike Farm, Tadcaster

February 18, an all-day pond course in the Malton area (there is another one in the Northallerton area on February 24

February 25, a FWAG forum on CAP reform at the Angel Inn, Topcliffe, 7pm

February 29-30, all-day hedge-laying workshop at Sheffield.
