Club aid for air ambulance

HELMSLEY Young Farmers' Club held a dinner dance on December 6 at the Feathers Hotel, Helmsley.

It was well attended with a good representation from neighbouring clubs. The event made £250 for club funds and it was good to see older former members their enjoying themselves.

December 9 saw an excellent visit around Ian Mosey's mill at Gilling. Members were shown around by Nick, the mill manager, who explained the running of the computerised mill. He said that output had risen to 600-700 tons of pellets per week - above their own stock's needs - due to outside demand.

Maggie Haigh, who is in charge of the day-to-day running of the mill office and weighbridge explained the different types of straights they buy in and the rules and regulations they have to adhere to.

Afterwards, members went to the White Swan, at Ampleforth where they were provided with a much-appreciated supper,

Carol singing took place on two nights, December 16 and 26, to raise money for the air ambulance service.

The club thanks all those who gave members festive drinks and welcomed them inside their homes. The writer feels the singing at times was probably not at the club's best and people may have given a donation to move on to next unfortunate household!

On December 28, the club had a very successful bath-push, starting at Helmsley market place, then on to Harome, Wombleton and back to the Rose and Crown, Nawton, for afternoon lunch. It was lovely day but a bit chilly, especially for Anna Wheldon who was in the bath and couldn't get out at the local hostelries for a warm-up.

The club thanks the Star Inn at Harome which gave members drinks, food and a generous donation. Well done Nuffy for the bath construction and all the sponsors who gave a grand total of £800 for the air ambulance service.
