Woman dies in Malton crash

A RYEDALE woman was killed when she stepped from her car and was hit by another vehicle in Malton.

Police said the accident happened at 7.35pm yesterday at Newbiggin, between Spital Street and Mount Crescent, when a blue Vauxhall Nova travelling towards Malton hit a parked Ford Sierra facing the same direction. The crash victim, a 35-year-old Malton woman who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a third vehicle, a blue Peugeot 306 travelling away from Malton town centre then collided with the Vauxhall Nova. A 64-year-old man from Scotland, who had been in the Ford Sierra, needed treatment for minor injuries. Malton firefighters were called to the scene.

Fred Poad, of Newbiggin, said: "The road was very busy last night - the traffic was diverted and there were police and ambulance everywhere. They diverted traffic along Wentworth street."

Police have appealed for any witnesses to the accident or to the manner in which either of the vehicles were driven before the collision to come forward. Witnesses should contact traffic constable Mark Gonella on 01723 509662.
