  • No one can see the Milky Way

I USUALLY have a look out at the night before I go to bed - just an old habit, I expect, but today one doesn't see what one used to. I remember as a youngster often being called out by my sister to come and "just have a look at the Milky Way". I haven't seen it for a long, long time, and an article I read somewhere tells me why. My home, when a boy, was on Scarborough Road, beyond the last gas street lamp, so the nights were dark, and all the nightly display of stars was there to gaze at. Now, all that has changed. Towns, and even villages, are lit by bright lights, so that now there's just nothing to be seen if you look upwards. High intensity street lighting has taken over, and the aura of light which surrounds centres of housing, and towns, virtually stops the sky being seen. To see you have to get away out into the countryside somewhere. Strange to think that the improvement in urban lighting has had this effect, and that there must be several generations of people, especially city dwellers, who actually haven't seen the sky at night. Or the Milky Way! read more
