Dyson back to school

SIMON Dyson's brave bid to hang on to his European Golf Tour card for 2004 failed despite a gallant effort in the final counting event of the season, the Madrid Open.

The Ryedale ace finished a creditable three-under for the frost-hit event with rounds of 74, 66, 72, 69.

While it elevated him into 127th place in the Volvo Order of Merit, he needed to get into the top 115 to avoid having to enter the precarious qualifying school tournaments, which will start next month, also in Spain.

Dyson, who missed some important tournaments earlier in the season after fracturing a bone in his right hand, finished the season with earnings just short of £103,000.

The Madrid Open was won by Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez, who wiped out a last-round deficit of six shots to finish 14-under-par (69, 70, 66, 65).
