Record sale entries

A RECORD number of animals will be up for auction at next week's Fadmoor sheep sale.

The event will see 9,625 moor and down cross breeding sheep and store lambs go under the hammer on October 23.

Cundalls, of Market Place, Malton, which is organising the event, expects more than 500 people from across North Yorkshire to attend the sale. The firm also staged a sale at the same venue last month.

"This is the most number of entries we've had, it's normally around 7,000," said auctioneer Keith Warters.

"More people have entered the sale and more sheep have been entered. It's a good thing generally that farmers are able to go out and sell their stock."

A large proportion of the animals will be brought in locally from Bilsdale, Bransdale, Glaisdale and Ryedale to be sold generally to farmers in more lowland areas.

"It'll be the biggest sale we've held at Fadmoor," said Mr Warters.

"It's a good sign that people like to sell their sheep through a sale ring in an open field. Everyone has worked extremely hard on the organisation of the sale. We're hoping for successful sale on behalf of the vendors and the purchasers."

The sale will take place in a field opposite Fadmoor village hall. Farmers are expected to bring their sheep from 6am, and the sale will start at 10.30am.
