Crypt is used regularly

WE were interested to read the comments about Lastingham Crypt (Gazette & Herald) as part of a proposed cycling circuit. It is not surprising that the suggestion was made for such a special place to be visited. Many visitors are affected by the atmosphere: thousands have been touched by the quiet that perhaps only develops in places where so many have come to share their joys and sorrows in quiet prayer.

What was unusual was the reaction of wanting to leave at speed when most are inclined to linger. Many people return year after year. Perhaps the need for your columnist to leave at speed was a result of listening to superficial stories of hauntings and witches, rather than to the peace and quiet of a remarkable place.

Many of your readers will know that the crypt is used regularly. We hold a two services in the crypt every week throughout the year: a celebration of the Eucharist every Wednesday morning at 9.30am, and morning prayer at least every Saturday at 9am.
