Prices at the stock markets

MALTON

Forward on October 3, on the second day of the annual Michaelmas sale of breeding sheep and store lambs, were 25 store cattle and 1,785 store lambs.

Cattle: Ch bullocks to £648 from H L & J Middlewood; Lim, bullocks to £440 from D Johnson, heifers to £430 from C T Stonehouse; BB, heifers to £470 from K N Hurst; AA, bulls to £445 from K Hodgson.

Sheep: Suffolk X gimmer lambs to £83 from G and I Marwood, Texel gimmer lambs to £47 from K Chapman, Suffolk X store lambs to £45.50 from J H Smedley, Texel X store lambs to £45.50 from J H Smedley. Overall average store lambs £41.14.

RUSWARP

The annual sale of horned lambs, on October 4, saw the dearest trade for many years. A total entry of 1,950 left many vendors ruing their decision to forward less than expected and a wide range of buyers from as far afield as Cumbria pushed up prices

Sheep: Swale gimmer lambs to £48 (£39.22), Scots gimmer lambs to £42 (£35), Swale wether lambs to £31.50 (£22.08), Scots wether lambs to £37 (£28.68).

Forward on October 6 were 466 sheep including 85 ewes.

Sheep: lambs, standard to £41.80 or 110p (103.4p), med to £47.80 or 107.6p (104.6p), heavy to £51.80 or 108.7p (102.5p), overweights to £55 or 99.4p (98.3p); ewes, Texel to £40, Suffolk to £38, Mule to £39, Swale to £29.80, Scots to £31.

SELBY

Forward on October 1 were 211 cattle including 102 clean, 88 bulls, 21 cows; 324 sheep including 241 spring lambs, eight hoggs, 45 ewes; 558 pigs including 93 sows/boars.

Cattle: steers, light to 90.5p (88.99p), med to 115.5p (103.09p), heavy to 127.5p (105.52p; heifers, light to 117.5p, med to 119.5p (98.58p), heavy to 135.5p (103.68p); bulls light to 89.5p (85.73p), med to 104.5p (88.47p), heavy to 116.5p (96.73p).

Sheep: lambs, light to 100p, med to 127.6p (112.6p), heavy to 120.3p (111.41p); hoggs, heavy to 95p (85.23p); ewes to £46 (£38.25).

Pigs: porkers to 91p (82.27p), cutters to 95p (82.23p), baconers to 93.5p (78.2p), overweights to 73p (70.08p); sows to 48p (46.56p), boars to 31p (30.09p).

THIRSK

Forward on October 2 were 368 cattle including 179 young bulls; 1,714 sheep including 121 ewes; 207 pigs including 55 sows.

Cattle: steers, med to 123.5p (93.5p), heavy to £743 or 113.5p (94.9p); heifers, med to 125.5p (107.3p), heavy to £793 or 134.5p (103.3p); black & white young bulls, med to 87.5p (78.7p), heavy to £599 or 91.5p (81.2p); Cont bulls, med to 113.5p (97.5p), heavy to £597 or 110.5p (99.2p).

Sheep: lambs, standard to 114.3p (100.4p), med to 116.6p (102.1p), heavy to £56 or 116p (101.5p); ewes, light to £37 (£24.45), heavy to £45.50 (£36.27); Suffolks to £45.50, Cont to £43, Mules to £45.50, Leicesters to £33, Swales to £16.

Pigs: porkers to 77.5p (74.7p), cutters to 80.5p (74.4p), baconers to 72p (69.5p), sows to 54p (45.6p).

YORK

Forward on October 2 were 236 accredited cattle including 22 calves, 206 store cattle and four cows with calves; 35 store sheep; 17 store pigs including two breeding pigs.

Cattle: Blond cow & calf to £485, Lim cow & calf to £425; store cattle, Ch to £425 (steers £408, heifers £331), Lim to £525 (steers £448, heifers £371), Sim to £528 (steers £487, heifers £358), BB to £490 (steers £490, heifers £355), Fr to £370 (bulls £201, steers £348), Blond to £462 (steers (£461), AA to £470 (bulls £410, steers £470, heifers £348), South Devon to £500 (steers £500); calves, Sim bulls to £120 (£105), Fr bulls to £98 (£77), Lim bulls to £142 (£117), Lim heifers to £50, BB bulls to £200 (£163), Lim heifers to £95 (£92), Mont to £175 (£161).

Sheep: Store lambs to £40.50 (£39).

Total sales for the seven days to October 6: 220 cattle, 180 live auction, 40 OTMS; 425 sheep, 262 live auction including 72 ewes, 163 deadweight; 708 pigs, 249 live, 34 sows, 425 deadweight.

Cattle: finished steers, premium to 125.5p (105.6p), prime to 96.5p (93.6p) others to 89.5p (83.2p); finished heifers, premium to 125.5p (111.7p) prime to 97.5p (95p), others to 88.5p (82.5p); finished young bulls, premium to 120.5p (108.2p) prime to 97.5p (94p), others to 89.5p (80.4p), Cont young bulls to 120.5p (105.5p), black & white young bulls to 92.5p (80.5p); Cont steers to 125.5p (99.6p), other steers to 91.5p (79.9p); Cont heifers to 125.5p (103.4p).

Sheep: lambs, standard to 115.8p (106.2p), med to 112.8p (106.9p), heavy to 110.8p (107.6p).

Pigs: porkers to 101p (81.1p), cutters to 99.5p (87.6p), baconers to 93p (82.2p); sows to 46p (44.5p); deadweight, cutters 107p to 110p, baconers 104p to 106.
