Going green earns award for children

YOUNGSTERS at West Heslerton Primary School have been set a major financial dilemma - how to spend £300.

The money was given along with a certificate when they won the Guidance Enterprises Group competition with the Pathfinders charity after producing one of the best recycling projects of any school in Yorkshire.

The school's newly-elected council, pictured right with the certificate, is now seeking suggestions from other pupils on how best to spend the money to benefit everyone in the school, said head teacher Rachel Wells.

The council - elected by the pupils - is already planning to develop the school grounds through fundraising and to provide a new climbing frame and fitness trail.

"The school has a innovative careers dimension," said Mrs Wells. "We were delighted to win the money because it will be of great benefit to the school and the children will have plenty of ideas to choose from."

The recycling project included saving the cores and peel from fruit taken to school by the children, making it into compost and digging it into the school garden, and in turn it aided the growth of vegetables and flowers planted by the children.
