Pupils get their very own garden of delights

Thanks to the hard work of teachers, children and parents at St Mary's RC Primary School, in Malton, a new school garden was officially opened last Thursday.

A special mass was held in the garden to mark the opening.

Headteacher Katherine Snape said: "It was a lovely occasion. It was wet in the morning but thankfully it dried out."

With the help of John Layton, from Ryedale District Council, the school has built the garden over the last two years, and pupils were involved with the designing and planting. Included are two mosaics - a three-dimensional one of a hedgehog and a circular one which incorporates pupils' impressions of the school.

Teacher Jackie Shepherd, who had the idea of building a garden, said: "It's a great relief and great pleasure to see the garden finished."
