Super Shepherd innings in vain as Pikes slip up

Hunters York and District - Senior League Premier Division, Pickering 203 for 6 lost to Heworth 204 for 3 by 7 wickets. PICKERING slumped to a home defeat at the hands of Heworth in the York Senior League Premier Division.

Put in to bat, Pickering had to rely on the talents of Mark Shepherd (76) and Colin Frank (40) who figured in an 84-run fourth-wicket stand.

When Frank was out, Sean Stuchbery did well to add 59 along with Shepherd.

Shepherd's innings ended after 124 balls and included nine fours and a six.

Heworth bowled tightly throughout, with Sayyaz taking 3 for 32, Mamood 2 for 67 and Saif 1 for 40.

Dave Simpson dominated the Heworth innings and the Pikes attack in scoring an unbeaten 106. His innings took 131 balls and included ten fours and a six. Good support came from Mamood (50 not out in 56 balls) as the pair added 115 in an unbroken partnership that took the visitors to the win. Mark Shepherd collected 2 for 65 and Tony Evans 1 for 48. Craig Aconley bowled his first seven overs for just 13 and finished with 0 for 31.

League round-up

In division one, Duncombe Park were bowled out for 151 and went on to suffer a five-wicket reverse at the hands of Tadcaster Magnet, who have now closed to within seven points of the leaders, Sheriff Hutton Bridge. Brian Leckenby hit 67 and Alex Boyle 34, but Paul Clark's 22.5-over spell earned him 7 for 63 to put his side in command at the halfway stage.

After the break, overseas man Shaun Cook made 52 in alliance with opener Chris Malthouse as the pair added 101 in a decisive third-wicket stand. Peter Kent grabbed 3 for 20, but Malthouse saw Magnets to a five-wicket win with an undefeated 79.

Pace-setters Sheriff Hutton Bridge went down to a three-wicket defeat at the hands of lowly Pocklington, for whom Rod Hinch had a fine game. Hinch took 5 for 61 but could not prevent the high-scoring Bridge side again bagging full batting points. However, the Pocklington all-rounder then showed his prowess as he made an unbeaten 69 to propel the East Yorkshire side to a fine victory.

Mike Smith was Bridge's top scorer with 89, while Paul Scaling (37) and Paul Oldfield (28) gave sound support. Hinch's bowling assistance came from Mike Newhouse, who took 3 for 61, as the total reached 200 for 9. Pocklington's reply was led by Andy Inns, who made 82 before Hinch settled the issue, despite Smith's 3 for 63 and two wickets for Oldfield.

In division three, there was a low scoring draw at Elm Park Way, which saw Heworth close four runs short of Pickering seconds' 145 for 7. Andy Hill top scored for Pickering with 61, while K R Aconley made 26 and R W Aconley 32 in a total of 145 for 7. Dan Walton's 4 for 25 was the pick of Heworth's bowling.

When Heworth replied, Ian Nottingham made 41 before Hill again made his mark with 3 for 10. Graham Hogben tried hard to earn a win for his side with an unbeaten 38, but Heworth's time elapsed with them reaching 141 for 7.

Hovingham maintained second place with a win over a Yapham side who are edging nearer to the relegation zone. Yapham made a competitive score of 181 for 7, due to an unbeaten 78 by Paul Barnes and 35 from Jonathan Flint, who followed with 4 for 36. But 63 from Nick Elliott coupled with 47 by Alistair Thorpe enabled Hovingham to win in the last over by five wickets.

In division four, Sheriff Hutton were pegged back to 131 for 9 as Simon Hall (4 for 38) and Nigel Bartram (4 for 49) put Cawood in command. Ed Taylor, with 46, and Joel Wilford (44no) were the two successful batsmen. Richard Armitage then hit back with 4 for 42 but Stuart Baxter made 28 and Hall 36 as Cawood edged to a two-wicket win.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge seconds included three of their under-13 team, but their batsmen failed to back up their bowlers and slipped to a 55-run defeat when bowled out for 80 by Osbaldwick.

Philip Hall made 33 and Nigel Bellerby 47 as they put on 55 for the first wicket. From then on, Bridge bowlers Dave Houldridge (4 for 72) and Dave Ellis (5 for 37) took control as Osbaldwick were dismissed for 135.

However, only Bridge skipper Dave Ellis (24) offered token resistance as Bellerby took 4 for 4 in 22 deliveries. Marcus Hollis and Stuart Hall each helped themselves to a pair of wickets and Osbaldwick skipper Brian Burton was able to enjoy the trip to his former club with a victory.

Pocklington seconds reduced Selby's lead to six points at the top of division five when they had a beneficial draw at Hovingham seconds after setting 194-7 through Gary Milner (43) and Dave Gamble (39).

Mark Hemmingway hit a defiant 50no when Hovingham replied but Simon Hill (4-16) ended home hopes of victory and Hovingham settled for a draw at 135-7.
