Ryedale's ancient churches are pulling in the tourists

ANCIENT churches in Ryedale have become a major new tourist attraction in the district, in a new multi-funded scheme being pioneered by the Yorkshire Tourist Board.

Masterminding the project, known as the North Yorkshire Church Tourism Initiative, is Zoe Kemp, who says: "Its success has exceeded everyone's expectations and it's all due to the enthusiasm with which it has been received by the churches involved."

There are now some 227 churches involved, which are featured in seven specially designed colour guides.

"We have had excellent feedback from those churches which are taking part" Zoe said.

The increased number of visitors has resulted in extra donations in the collecting boxes and a rise in the sale of memorabilia and candles.

"In many villages, the church is at the centre of the community," said Zoe.

A conference to promote church tourism, held recently in Lastingham Village Hall in Ryedale, attracted churchwardens and clergymen from all parts of North Yorkshire.

Grants totalling £13,000 have been given to promote the scheme, and to publish brochures and provide funding for such promotions as interpretation for visitors. The scheme also has its own website.

It is being backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Countryside Agency, Yorkshire Forward, the North York Moors National Park Authority, Ryedale District Council, and the Catholic, Anglican and Methodist church authorities in North Yorkshire.
