Two cases of potato blight reported in the district

TWO cases of potato blight have been confirmed in the district, reports the British Potato Council.

The infection was identified by BPC 'blight scouts' close to Haxby and between Malton and Helmsley.

Potato growers in the surrounding areas should intensify their crop monitoring and blight control programmes, warns the BPC. If left uncontrolled, it can spread and have serious consequences for growing crops.

Laboratory analysis confirmed the blight strain and this was immediately highlighted on website (www.potato.org.uk/blight), a blight mapping scheme to warn growers of the potential threat. Updates on blight are posted regularly.
