MALTON and Norton Golf Club member Andrew Shipley shot his first hole-in-one recently, while playing in a national competition with fellow Malton member Eddie Ruddock.
Shipley, from Sheriff Hutton, who plays off a 17-handicap, holed his seven iron from the tee of the 157-yard par three seventh hole of Winyard Park golf course, in Teesside, during the fourth round of the Marley Golf Classic.
He and Ruddock, who is vice-captain at Malton, won the match three and two. The pair have played together in the competition, which attracted 2,500 entries from across the country, for several years. They are aiming to qualify for the final which will be held at the future Ryder Cup venue, Celtic Manor, in Wales. The pair made it to the final back in the late nineties when they played at the Forest of Arden course.

Simon Dyson missed out on the chance to make a big jump up the European Order of Merit last Sunday in the French Open in Paris. Following rounds of 70, 69 and 69, the Malton and Norton golfer was just four shots off the lead on eight under par with the final round to play. But a 77 on the last day saw him slip to three under and joint 49th in the field, a position which netted him just over £8,000. Englishman Philip Golding won the event, finishing on 15 under par.
Dyson, who has been hit by injury this year, is currently back in 152nd spot in the European rankings. His next tournament is the Smurfit European Open at Ireland's K Club, which starts tomorrow.
