Hotel to close as owners go

AN award-winning hotel and restaurant is to close at the end of this month when the owners retire from the trade after five-and-a-half years.

Peter and Gerd Handley, from Ryedale Country Lodge in Nunnington, outside Helmsley, have sold the former railway station to a buyer who plans to convert the premises into a home.

The seven-bedroom hotel, set in a quiet location near the River Rye, has received national recognition over the years. It is currently the Les Routiers Hotel of the Year 2003 for North East England after the assessors described it as an extraordinary place with high standards of personal service, impressive cooking and accommodation and a magnificent, relaxed restaurant. The English Tourism Council awarded the hotel a Silver Award for excellence, an award only given to a handful of hotels in the county.
