TRISH has been named the winner at the British Female Inventor of the Year Awards.

Mrs Fearn, who set up the National Equine Defence Society in Birkin, near Selby, has spent 12 years developing the Lite-Lift shavings fork and shovel to muck out stables. Born with one hand, she decided there must be an easier way of mucking out after suffering chronic tendonitis in her good arm. It got so bad that there was a possibility she would have to give up caring for her rescued horses, ponies and donkeys.

EAST Yorkshire riders are celebrating a grant of £500 to buy new equipment. Ebor Vale Riding for the Disabled, near Market Weighton, received the money from the Ronald McDonald Children's Charities. The centre offers those with special needs the chance to learn how to ride and was able to buy new equipment with the funding.

DOZENS of young riders will be showing off their skills at Bishop Burton College on May 10, from 10am. College staff and British Show Jumping Association judges will be keeping an eye open for exceptional young riders who may be offered places on equine courses at the college. Teams wishing to enter should apply, through their schools, to Lucy Eyre (eyre@bishopburton.ac.uk).

A SHOW-cross (show jumping and cross-country) competition will be held on Sunday, May 11, at the new and demanding Hamley Hagg Farm site at Appleton-le-Moors, near Kirkbymoorside.

Organised by Scarborough and District Riding Club, the event starts at 11am. Classes include novice and open pony and horse in the show-cross. If time and conditions permit, the last class will be a clear round cross-country.
