Young Farmers Club reports

HELMSLEY

ON April 8, Helmsley YFC visited the Territorial Army Regiment at Fulford Road headquarters in York. We were joined by Snainton, Amotherby, Stokesley and Easingwold YFCs.

The trip was organised by Philip Johnson, of Harome, a TA member and former Young Farmers member, who is at this present time serving in Iraq. We started by having a slide show and talk about the TA and then went to the drill yard where we looked around five different platoons, ranging from rifles and rocket launchers to navigation equipment. We then went back inside where we had another brief talk and we could ask questions. The TA then laid on free drinks and supper.

They made us feel very welcome and were clear in explaining the role of a TA member. The writer would recommend this visit to any other clubs or organisations because we all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We had a very good turnout of members with around 80-90 YFC members there in total. Our old Young Farmer, Mark Rooke, felt that a second-hand bazooka would be good for keeping pigeons off the oil-seed rape!

YOUNG farmers are planning to show the public what they are made of with a new event in North Yorkshire this summer.

The Yorkshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs will hold its first County Show on Sunday, June 1, at the Nidderdale Showground, Pateley Bridge.

During the show, the 51 clubs in the county will compete for trophies in events such as stock judging, an obstacle race, a tug of war and, more unusually, salsa dancing.

There will also be a pre-show dance at the ground, on Friday, May 30, including a hog roast supper. Tickets are £9 and can be booked on (01423) 865870.
