Family mourns soldier killed in ambush

THE relatives of a Royal Marine killed in action in Iraq have said he was a man of "character, honour and principles".

Christopher Maddison, 24, whose mother is believed to live in Scarborough, was killed in fighting near Basra at the weekend when a river launch was ambushed.

In a statement released through the Ministry of Defence, his parents said: "Christopher Maddison was loved and respected by everybody who knew him.

"He was a man of character, honour and principles who always fought for those less able.

"As he lived, he died, with strength and courage."

His parents added: "He died in a war that will be won in his name alongside all the other brave souls who selflessly gave themselves for the freedom of all our nations.

"God bless him and all his brothers and sisters."

Marine Maddison was a member of 9 Assault Squadron, based in Plymouth.

He was on one of two river launches alongside 40 Commando as they attempted to destroy Iraqi units.

Several other soldiers were injured in the machine gun and rocket attack along the Al Faw peninsula.

Marine Maddison died at a field hospital following the ambush, which took place near a vital crossing point on the River Zubayr on Sunday.
