New variety is 'highest-yielding'

A NEW wheat, said to be the highest-yielding variety available, is to be introduced this autumn.

The information comes from Nickerson (UK) which says Nijinsky is the result of crossing the widely-grown varieties Claire and Consort. The firm says the new variety will yield 4pc more than Claire and 6pc more than Consort.

Quality tests carried out to date indicate very similar Group 3 quality to its parents. Nijinsky is said to have good resistance to Septoria diseases, yellow rust and eyespot, and improved mildew resistance compared to Claire. And from the Consort side of the line, Nijinsky gets its high rating for standing power and its short, stiff straw.

Nijinsky is due for recommendation in 2004, but some seed is available for autumn 2003 sowing. Contact your merchant for more details, or call Nickerson (UK) Ltd on telephone (01472) 371471, for your nearest supplier.
