I READ with horror the article in the Gazette & Herald about the so-called "Pickering recreation field" kindly given by Persimmon Homes.
This field which is adjacent to Vivis Mill is in a conservation area and certainly should not be urbanised, at massive costs, into a 'free for all' play area. As nobody seems to want to take over its maintenance, surely the most sensible solution is to let the farmer graze his sheep in there for a number of months per year.
This would provide free maintenance, ie hedges and fences kept in order, the grass would look cut and well-fertilised and we could all enjoy walks, with our dogs if we have them, or a nice path through the field supplied by Persimmon.
There are large beds of daffodils and narcissi coming through in the field now; surely it is important to retain this wonderful natural landscape where children can learn the beauty of free uncommercial pleasures.
