DEFRA has confirmed a third case of contagious equine metritis (CEM), in a mare in Staffordshire.

Late last year, the disease was confirmed in a stallion and a mare. The latest case is in a mare that was known to have been covered by the infected stallion.

CEM is a treatable venereal disease of horses, which poses no risk to human health.

At the time that the mare was tested, it was already subject to statutory movement and breeding restrictions as an "at risk" horse. This followed a veterinary inquiry into the first case of CEM.
