Organic calves on estate

THE first organic calves in a major environmental initiative at Castle Howard were born last week.

David Watson, farm manager, said: "Castle Howard introduced the herd in the summer of 2002 and they form an important part of a new 200-hectare organic unit on the estate.

"By 2004 we hope to increase the herd up to 120 heifers, each producing a calf a year."

The Aberdeen Angus can be seen grazing in the fields beyond the Temple of the Four Winds.

The organic farm is one of a series of environmental initiatives currently being implemented across the estate.

Other aspects include hedgerow seed collecting, creating ponds in marginal land, over-wintering of field stubble to provide winter bird food and a new 'green approach' allowing hedges to grow out and provide valuable cover for numerous wild birds.
