AT last a letter putting forward a common sense view of crime and punishment (February 12, Martin Crutwell).
Obviously the soft options are not working. Prison and community service are not deterrents because crime of all kinds is on the increase, and the perpetrators are becoming ever younger. The death penalty was abolished on the grounds that it didn't stop murders: of course it didn't, but there are a lot more murders now than formerly.
The European Convention on Human Rights did not contain one word about human responsibilities, hence has created the culture of blame and compensation in which we currently live. There should be no rights without clearly stated responsibilities. The judiciary needs to take a good look at itself too.
I suggest, in addition to the ideas of Martin Cruttwell, death by lethal injection of their own rubbish of convicted drug traffickers and dealers. Why not? They are responsible for ruining thousands of lives.
