Miracle at Sant' Anna by James McBride (Sceptre £6.99)

War in Tuscany around the tiny village of St Anna Di Stazzema is the setting for the story of four black soldiers of the 92nd Buffalo Division of the American Army. That division is made up of all-black soldiers commanded by white officers.

The stage is set in which they confront not only the Germans and Italian partisans but also racial prejudice. They're strengthened by their experience and conflicting companionship under adverse conditions.

Through all this is the touching story of how one life is changed by a young Italian boy, the sole survivor of and witness to a terrible massacre at the village.

Moving, looking below the layers of realism in war, the story brings a spiritual uplifting from the horrors of war.
