Trainers' fears over horse safety

A TOP-LEVEL meeting has been held between racehorse trainers, police, councillors, and highway officials following concerns about safety of horses and motorists in Norton.

"Horse crossing" signs could be provided in the town in a bid to resolve the situation.

Town Mayor Keith Mennell said it had been "a very good meeting", adding that there were several difficulties, including motorists parking on verges and blocking footpaths, with Langton Road being the biggest problem.

Trainers were concerned about the speed of traffic using Welham Road, and had requested road markings - but this could not be done because it was a road with a 30 mph limit. They could be put in an area which has a 20 mph or a 40 mph limit but not a 30 mph limit,"he said.

A report from Norton town clerk Roger King said concerns from five local trainers who used the roads on the outskirts of Norton led to the meeting.
