A touch of Africa comes to Ryedale

CHILDREN at one North Yorkshire school forgot about the wintry weather when they held an African-themed day in aid of Unicef.

Pupils at Luttons County Primary, in West Lutton, came to lessons for a day of special activities learning all about children in different African countries.

Headteacher Tracey Gilbank said: "In return for a donation of 50p each, the children took part in different African activities.

"They found out about how children in Africa live, what kind of music and games they might enjoy, and other things.

"It's an opportunity for the children to broaden their horizons, and to grasp the problems faced by other children around the world."

Mrs Gilbank said they were also challenging some of the stereotypes.

"We wanted the children to see that the colourful costumes of traditional dress are not the norm - many of the children are in Western gear that is maybe fourth or fifth hand."
