Flying start for Laura

A TOP flight recruit is getting to grips with an array of exotic species at a North Yorkshire bird centre.

Laura Connolly, 18, has become a trainee falconer at the Sion Hill Hall's birds of prey centre, near Thirsk.

Laura, from Thirsk, 'landed' the job after finishing sixth form college in York and has spent time getting to know the centre's falcons, eagles, owls, buzzards and even vultures.

"They are like small children. It's all about building up trust," she said.

That trust was put to the test when she took over the birds' nest for the weekend.

Laura added: "This job just appealed to me. I am really interested in animals and just knew I wanted to do it.

"I couldn't imagine doing anything else."
