Two entirely different personalities are brought together by the conflict of the First World War when they serve in a hospital for men wounded at the front.

They share adversity, triumph and heartache when Maddy's love goes to the front and she does not receive the letters she expects, and Lou becomes entangled with one of their patients as the war propels them quickly into adulthood.

This moving, at times poignant, at times amusing, story holds the attention and leaves us wondering what the future holds for these two interesting characters, and hoping that we shall find out in another book.
