The Lord of the Rings: The Making of the Movie Trilogy by Brian Sibley (HarperCollins £12.99)

WHEN we watch such an outstanding film as the Lord of the Rings, we must wonder how it was created.

Here in this absorbing book we are taken behind the scenes to discover just that, from the initial conception to the final exposure on the screen. This makes an interesting story in itself and we come to understand all the unseen aspects that go into making a creation of this kind.

A script must be written, locations must be found, studio work allocated, cast engaged, effects worked out, characters made up to fit the part, scenes choreographed, and so on. Given plain costing figures, we must wonder why film costs so much, but reading a book like this we realise what has to be done and the expense before the film reaches its final conclusion.

A book like this throws a new light on the making of films and our enjoyment of them. It is well illustrated with colour photographs that bring the making of the film alive.
