Protest plans

THE Countryside Alliance and the Council of Hunting Associations have announced "upscaled" protest plans, including national advertising campaigns.

It's a response to the outcome of the hunting bill's key committee stage last week. The two groups accused rural affairs minister Alun Michael of "surrendering to expediency".

Alliance chairman John Jackson said the bill "ignored the basis of the minister's consultation and with no justification narrowed the core definition of 'utility' so as to exclude all economic, wildlife management and social benefits of hunting.

"Secondly it pre-judged different forms of hunting: hare coursing and deer hunting would not to be allowed to make their case for registration whilst 'ratting' and

'rabbiting' were not be required to."
