HELMSLEY is to get a portable speed camera in an effort to curb speeding motorists.
But the town council heard that hopes of an early start on installing a pedestrian crossing on the A170 road had been dashed because of the cost. Town clerk John Dale said a precise site for the crossing had yet to be decided.
The vice chairman of the council, Coun Ken Claridge, said the crossing was needed as a priority. He said the traffic situation and parking problems around Helmsley county primary school and the clinic were the worst anywhere in the market town.
"It is an accident waiting to happen," he added
Mr Dale said a 20mph zone was to be provided in the area as part of the traffic management strategy agreed by North Yorkshire County Council.
A 40mph zone is also to be introduced on the approach to Helmsley, near the Harome junction. Councillors said they were concerned that there was no lollipop warden to take children attending the primary school across the road.
Coun Betty Leckonby said there appeared to be difficulty in recruiting someone.
lSome £8,000 is to be spent on The Lymes play area, removing wooden surrounds, levelling the area with 126 tons of soil from the York sugar beet factory, and laying rubber safety matting around the play equipment, with the remainder of the area being grassed.
