Great Cathedrals by Bernhard Schutz (Abrams £60)

You may quibble at the choice which ranges across Europe and is presented by country.

Some of the cathedrals you may know, others you may not, but this book will help you to discover them, as you absorb the magnificent photographs in black and white and colour.

The images have the power to stand you outside the building and then draw you inside and be in awe of the magnificent medieval architecture, sculpture and stained glass.

The authoritative text puts the history and architectural development of each cathedral in the context of the overall progression of cathedral building.

But it is the visual impact of the photographs that takes the breath away and leaves you with a sense of having witnessed the creation of a great heritage of which we should be proud.

You may think twice at the price but don't - it is worth every penny.
