Doctor ready to say farewell

STAFF at a North Yorkshire surgery are preparing to say farewell to one of their longest-serving doctors.

Dr Elaine Powley will retire from medicine at the end of the month after more than 20 years at the practice in Tinley Garth, Kirkbymoorside.

The Chester-le-Street born doctor, who joined the practice in 1979, has played a key role in its development and expansion over the years.

A passionate art lover, her influence can clearly be seen throughout the Victorian converted school, including a silver fish mobile, made as part of a community art project co-ordinated by local artist Nelly Trevelyan.

"She will be very much missed," said practice manager Kay Lund.

"She has some very special qualities and we will miss her not only for her clinical ability and commitment, but also for her personal creativity and imagination."

When asked what she planned to do with her free time, Dr Powley said travelling was number one on her list.

"One of the places I hope to visit next year is Antarctica," she said. "I've wanted to go there for years. Other than that, I will continue following my passion for films and literature."

She added she had no plans to leave the village on her retirement as she regarded it with "the greatest respect and affection".

She will be replaced by two part-time doctors, Jackie Lodge and Helen Fortune-Jones, who will start on New Year's Day.

Patients who wish to contribute towards a community retirement gift for Dr Powley may make donations at the surgery or at Barclays Bank in Kirkbymoorside until the end of December.
