Towns to get homes for the young

OLD properties at Malton and Norton are being restored to provide much-needed accommodation for young people.

The aim is to encourage them to stay in the area rather than move to York or Scarborough, said Brian Clarke, director of the Ryedale Housing Association.

About 21 properties are being renovated at Malton, in Wells Lane, Yorkersgate, Stephen's Yard, Finkle Street, and at Norton, in Wold Street and Poplar View. The project will include provision of a number of flats.

The association, which is based at Leat House, in Welham Road, Norton, is working in partnership with Yorkshire Forward, the regional development agency, and Ryedale Regeneration Partnership, with funding being provided from the government's Single Regeneration Budget (SRB).

To qualify as tenants, young people need to be aged between 16 and 29, and be in work in Ryedale or be training or looking for a job in the district.

"We are determined to enable young people who have grown up in Ryedale to find affordable homes in the area, providing they are working or plan to work locally," Mr Clarke said.

"With house prices soaring in rural areas, many young people stand no chance of buying a property in their home town or village and cannot afford the high rents which landlords know they can achieve on the open market."

Through the scheme young people are being given training in skills to enable them to find employment in Ryedale, and providing them with accommodation will keep Ryedale's young generation in the area and boost the local economy, providing them with work, said Mr Clarke.
